Stub vs. Capacitor for Power Supply Noise Reduction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper compares a stub and a decoupling capacitor for power supply noise reduction. A quarter-length stub attached to the power supply line of an LSI chip works as a band-eliminate filter, and suppresses the power supply bounce of the designed frequency. The conditions where the stub is more effective than the same-area decoupling capacitor are clarified. The stub will work more efficiently and on-chip integration will be possible on high frequency operation LSIs. key words: stub, decoupling capacitor, power supply noise, di/dt noise, IR drop

Preliminary Experiments for Power Supply Noise Reduction Using On-Board Stubs
This paper demonstrates a power supply noise reduction using on-board stubs. A quarter-length stub attached to the power supply line of an LSI chip works as a band-eliminate filter, and suppresses the power supply noise of the designed frequency. Preliminary experiments show that 87% of the designed frequency noise component is suppressed when stub patterns are written on a power supply area on...
متن کاملA Sub-µW Tuneable Switched-Capacitor Amplifier-Filter for Neural Recording Using a Class-C Inverter
A two stage sub-µW Inverter-based switched-capacitor amplifier-filter is presented which is capable of amplifying both spikes and local field potentials (LFP) signals. Here we employ a switched capacitor technique for frequency tuning and reducing of 1/f noise of two stages. The reduction of power consumption is very necessary for neural recording devices however, in switched capacitor (SC) cir...
متن کاملDECOUPLING CAPACITOR DESIGN ISSUES IN 90NM CMOS by
On-chip decoupling capacitors (decaps) are widely used to reduce power supply noise. Typically, designs use NMOS decaps between standard-cell blocks and NMOS+PMOS decaps within the blocks. Starting at the 90nm CMOS technology node, the traditional decap designs may no longer be suitable due to increased concerns regarding thin-oxide gate leakage and electrostatic discharge (ESD) reliability. Th...
متن کاملAn Improved Active Decoupling Capacitor for “Hot-Spot” Supply Noise Reduction in ASIC Designs
On-chip decoupling capacitors (decaps) are widely used to reduce power supply noise by placing them at the appropriate locations on the chip between blocks. While passive decaps can provide a certain degree of protection against IR drop, if a problem is found after the physical design is completed, it is difficult to implement a quick fix to the problem. In this paper, we investigate the use of...
متن کاملUnderstanding Power Impedance Supply for Optimum Decoupling
Noise in power supplies is not only caused by the power supply itself, but also the load’s interaction with the power supply (i.e. dynamic loads, switching, etc.). To lower load induced noise, most uninitiated designers use the biggest, lowest impedance capacitor that can be found, thinking that this will absorb the dynamic load current. This method is often hit and miss, and can even cause the...
